I wanna hear some commentary action! I wanna know why you chose Bulbasaur when Charmander is clearly the better choice. The beginning of the game starts with mostly grass an bug types. It's gonna be a pain in the ass to start with. Plus, you should really play something with color. Leaf Green and Fire Red are the same game with a better after game Smile

Can that commentary get any more bland? You need to show some emotion, put some effort into talking into a mic!

You don't even sound interested Pokemon Blue! 276920

No Mittens, he's not being boring, he's trying to contain his inner 12-year old excitement so he just sounds apathetic, but really he's slowly losing the ability to hold back. Just wait, he'll start boyishly screaming any moment.

In response to this, Charmander is most definitely not the best choice ESPECIALLY for the early parts of the game [first two gym leaders = Rock (Brock) and Water (Misty)]. In every single Pokemon version there is, you will find the most ease in picking a Water type, and the most difficult in picking a Grass type (this is completely based on how type matchups work, you can't refute this, I'm kind of a Pokemon expert unfortunately...).

Yeah usually Grass is the least favorite I prefer fire the most but I'm going to use Squirtle on Red and then Charmander on LeafGreen

How can grass be the most difficult if it super effective against the first two gym types?

You should be able to answer this question for yourself just by thinking of how useful each type is throughout the entirety of a Pokemon game. Despite the fact that of the three Pokemon, Venusaur is far superior to the other two in terms of usefulness and team composition, but naturally, back in Generation 1, Water type was even more powerful than it is in future generations because of the sheer number of types it is super-effective, resistant to, or neutral to. In this case, because Bulbasaur and it's evolutions have the sub-type of Poison, this makes it less useful in the long run against many of the harder opponents you will face. I'm just talking from experience...

I believe you lol. I just didn't know your reasons.

I like all the gen I starters. The gen II staters ehh, and the gen III starters are pretty cool. I stopped playing after that.

I tried to get a DS emulator on my computer, but it works slow, and I don't really enjoy it. I might try again since I got a new laptop.

That's why you catch different pokemon, Charmander is the easiest to start out with. We aren't talking about later in the game. You can catch a grass and water type pretty early on. You can sit here and come up with some reasoning on how bulbasaur or squirtle are better but we all know Charmander is the easiest and fastest to start out with. Why wait 3-4 turns to faint a pokemon when you can do it one?

It's down to personal preference on what you choose and how you play but either way Charmander or any fire type for any old pokemon games are the easiest to start out with.

Yeah, I like Generation III the most (Mudkip --> Swampert is still the best starter of all starters even up until now in Generation V), and I started playing Pokemon when Gen II first came out on the GBC so the starters and stuff from Silver and Gold have a special place in the desolate icy wasteland that is my heart. I also tried a DS emulator and unfortunately my computer can't run it well because of how framey it gets either Neutral
And as far as whatever the hell is being spewed from Mittens... I'm just going to assume he's trolling...

Yeah I've pretty much ignored everything you've said because I didn't think it was worth my time to tell you that you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about... But since most of us here are very well aware of your "reputation" for that sort of thing, it comes as no surprise.

Charmander's biggest problem (Brock) is taken care of in the re-make of red and blue( fire red and leaf green) giving charmander metal claw at level 13 which is super effective against rock type. Charmander has the highest EV for Attack, Special attack and Speed out of all 3 of the starting pokemon. His defense stats are second to blastoise, but not far off and venusaur only has 20-30 more possible health then charzard, but venusaur has a lot more weaknesses and he is slow.

Charmander might be "harder" for the first two gyms, but there are multiple ways around this. You can easily catch a mankey by palet town or a butterfree in the forest to deal with brock and the same butterfree(sleep powder) or pikachu can be found in the forest as well. So there are ways to deal with your sub-par early game, but I just man mode it and play with mostly just charmander getting him to charizard before I get to misty and use my speed( flying type) to hit first and my Attack and Special attack(fire type) to crush in one move.

This is correct, but iirc the original Pokemon Red and Blue (which is what I'm explaining about since the aforementioned playthrough by Mike was on the original games...), this was not the case (Metal Claw is a Generation II move). Even in Fire Red and Leaf Green, you will find that of THE STARTERS, Charmander still will have the roughest early start, and he rounds out making him and Venusaur the best overall picks (as Blastoise falls off as a damage dealer and is rather average at everything, even so Water type is a superior TYPING than the other two).

The stats make no difference in terms of today's effectiveness (competitively speaking), or in the original Generation I or III games (III = Fire Red + Leaf Green since they include Gen III Pokemon). Venusaur has since the beginning of Pokemon been the superior starter Pokemon to the other two (but at first, not by much), and especially in competitive play today (in which he is far superior to the former two Gen I starters), remains so.

This conversation of course makes little difference to me as the opinions on this subject make little difference in the grand scheme of things because Pokemon in general is such an easy game series to get a handle on (competitive notwithstanding), and the games get progressively easier in terms of difficulty of the main game (but more complicated in the meta).

- former competitive Pokemon player since Gen III

I understand that bulbasaur is easier to start with, but charmander has the highest growth rate of any of the starters and highest of all three in speed, attack and special attack. Only down by 20-30 hp and not as many weaknesses.
